This unit provides the fundamentals for controlling 3 phase motors with a variable frequency drive. Students will be introduced to 3 phase 400 Volt variable speed drives and 230 Volt 3 phase VSD’s.

At the completion of the unit, students will develop skills in VSD programming through laboratory experiments to suit a designed motor application.

The topics covered in this course include:

  • Programming 400 Volt, 3 phase VSDs
  • Programming 230 Volt, 3 phase VSDs
  • Remote start / stop of VSD
  • Power and control wiring connection, testing and commissioning of VSDs
  • Understanding of ABB, SEW, Delta and Danfoss VSDs


On successful completion of this unit, student will be able to:

  • Wire, connect, test and commission VSD’s
  • Program VSD’s for acceleration, deceleration, integrated coast to stop with brake motors
  • Fault find variable speed drives and identify error messages


Continuous assessment: 60%
Written examination (2 hours): 40%

Students must achieve at least 75% of the total marks in the continuous assessment component, and at least 75% of the total marks in the written examination, to pass this unit of study.

Workload Requirement

Twelve 4-hour sessions.
6 hours private study per week.


Certificate 3 in Electrotechnology, or equivalent.
ENG1002, ENG1005 or equivalent.
Must be a qualified 'A' Grade Electrician, or be trained under the direct supervision of an 'A' Grade Electrician, to participate in this course of study.
